Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register my daughter to play?
AVGSL utilizes an on-line registration website. Please refer to our Registration page from the tool bar.

How much does it cost to play?
The registration fee for the 2010 season is $175. AVGSL offers a $10 discount for each additional child.

What is included with the registation fee?
AVGSL is a non-profit organization, and is 100% volunteer run . All fees collected are utilized to run the league. Each player will receive a uniform consisting of a numbered jersey, shorts, socks, and a visor. They will receive individual player and team photos. At the end of the season, they will receive a year book and a trophy.

Do I need to do volunteer work for the league?
Yes, the AVGSL is a 100% volunteer run league. We ask all families to volunteer to help with pre-season field prep and in the Snack Shack.

I'd like to help as a coach. How do I do that?
As part of the registration process, you may sign up to volunteer your time as a coach. AVGSL allows one head coach and one assistant coach per team, however we encourage parents to help with practices. The more parent help in practice, the easier it is for the coaches to run a productive practice. AVGSL encourages the moms to sign up as well for coaching positions. We also require at least one female chaperon for each team. If you'd like to volunteer to be a chaperone, you may specify so during registration, or let your daughter's coach know at your first team meeting.

How long is the season?
The season starts in February and runs until mid-May. This year we do have a free clinic scheduled for the end of January. Please refer to our Calendar page.

When do the girls practice and play?
We typically start the season practicing 2-3 days a week. Then when we start playing games, we will typically practice 1 day a week and play 2 games a week. One game will be played on a week night, and the other will be played on a Saturday. Following is the typical division schedule.
Typical Division Schedules (subject to change)
06U – Mon, Wed, Sat
08U – Tue, Thu, Sat
10U – Mon, Wed, Sat
12U – Tue, Thu, Sat
14/16U – Mon, Wed, Sat
* Fridays are used in some age groups

Where do the girls play?
AVGSL is permitted to use the softball fields at Greystone Elementary School, Bret Harte Middle School, and Leland High School. Please refer to our Field Info page to find more information regarding our fields.

What equipment will I need?
The league will provide team batting helmets and team bats for the girls to use. You should provide a softball glove and cleats. Glove size will vary based on the age of your daughter. Soccer cleats may be worn for softball, however softball cleats may not be worn for soccer. As the child grows and becomes more committed, many parents purchase their daughter their own batting helmet and bat. This helps the player be more comfortable, confident, and consistent in their play.

What age girls will my daughter be playing with?
Your daughter will be playing with girls of similar age. We create divisions based on a 2 year age grouping. For example 5 and 6 year olds will play together in the 6U division; 7 and 8 year olds will play in the 8U division; etc... Please refer to our Age Chartpage to see which division your daughter will play in.

Can my daughter play with her friends?
For the 6U and 8U divisions, we try to honor all player requests as part of the registration process. However for the 10U division and above, AVGSL utilizes a draft system in an effort to keep the teams more evenly matched. We do accept player requests, and will make an effort to meet those requests.
